“Kad su pridorske žene ovako hrabre, mi tu nemamo što tražiti.”

Ban Jelačić je, došao sa sjevera, iza pravca Dubice, nadomak tadašnjeg Pridora, tijekom sukoba na području Novog Grada (tur. Yeni Šehir). Htio je iskoristiti priliku dok u Pridoru nije bilo muške populacije jer su isti bili na novigradskom bojištu, te zauzeti grad koji, za razliku od Novog Grada, Kostajnice, Dubice i Gradiške, nikada nije pao pod austrijsku vlast. Uvidjevši šta im se sprema, Pridorčanke iz Starog grada, utvrde – popele su se na bedeme i zidine, zaposjele topove i započele obranu grada. Ban Jelačić je stajao na mjestu današnjeg gradskog stadiona koje je bila obradiva livada, kasnije nazvana Mejdan (tur. Bojište). Smatrajući da se radi o zashedi i trikovima, povukao se, a zapisano je ostalo sljedeće: “Kad su pridorske žene ovako hrabre, mi tu nemamo što tražiti.”


Ovaj odlomak opisuje jedan događaj iz historije Prijedora, koji se odnosi na Bana Josipa Jelačića, vojnog vođu koji je igrao važnu ulogu u hrvatskoj povijesti. Međutim, žene iz Pridora, primijetivši njegove namjere, odlučile su se suprotstaviti i obraniti grad. Čak su se popelile na bedeme i zidine grada te započele obranu. Jelačić, suočen s takvom hrabrošću i odlučnošću, shvatio je da nema šanse za uspjeh u toj situaciji. Iz tog razloga, povukao se, zaključivši da se ne isplati boriti protiv tako odlučnih i hrabrih žena. Ova priča pokazuje hrabrost i odlučnost žena u obrani svog grada. Mjesto na kojem je Jelačić stajao postalo je poznato kao “Mejdan”, što znači bojište na turskom jeziku, vjerojatno zbog važnosti borbe koja se odvijala na tom mjestu. Na žalost ovaj naziv za gradski stadion u Prijedoru odavno je izbrisan iz kolektivnog sjećanja Prijedorčana.

Opisani događaj jasno prikazuje da su žene igrale značajnu ulogu i doprinijele historiji grada Prijedora ali i cijele regije, na načine koji su često zanemareni ili zaboravljeni. Odlučnost pridorskih žena u obrani svog grada od Bana Jelačića jasno pokazuje važnost ženskog doprinosa historiji i zajednici. Njihova hrabrost i spremnost da se suoče s vojnim vođom poput Jelačića svjedoče o snazi ali i predanosti žena u zaštiti svojih domova. Ovaj događaj nas podsjeća da su žene često bile nepravedno zanemarene u historijskim zapisima, te je važno prepoznati i slaviti njihovu ulogu i doprinos u oblikovanju historije.

How the famous Ban Jelačić yielded to the brave women of Prijedor

"When the women of Prijedor are this brave, we have nothing to do here."

Ban Jelačić, coming from the north, behind the direction of Dubica, near the then Prijedor, during the conflict in the area of Novi Grad (Turkish Yeni Şehir). He wanted to take advantage of the opportunity while there was no male population in Prijedor because they were on the Novi Grad battlefield and occupy the city which, unlike Novi Grad, Kostajnica, Dubica, and Gradiška, never fell under Austrian rule. Seeing what awaited them, the women of Prijedor from the Old Town, fortresses - climbed onto the ramparts and walls, seized the cannons, and began to defend the city. Ban Jelačić stood at the location of today's city stadium, which was a cultivated meadow, later named the Mejdan (Turkish Bojište). Thinking it was a trap and trickery, he withdrew, and it was recorded: "When the women of Prijedor are this brave, we have nothing to do here."

This passage describes an event from the history of Prijedor, related to Ban Josip Jelačić, a military leader who played an important role in Croatian history. The story relates to his attempt to conquer the then Prijedor, a place of significance during the conflicts at that time. Faced with such bravery and determination, Jelačić realized that there was no chance of success in that situation. For this reason, he withdrew, concluding that it was not worth fighting against such determined and brave women. This story shows the courage and determination of women in defending their city. The place where Jelačić stood became known as "Mejdan," which means battlefield in Turkish, probably due to the significance of the battle that took place there. Unfortunately, this name for the city stadium in Prijedor has long been erased from the collective memory of the people of Prijedor.

The described event clearly shows that women played a significant role and contributed to the history of the city of Prijedor and the entire region, in ways that are often overlooked or forgotten. The determination of the women of Prijedor in defending their city from Ban Jelačić clearly demonstrates the importance of women's contribution to history and the community.
